Smoke Ventilation Systems
Smoke Ventilation Systems are life safety systems designed to facilitate the safe escape of occupants in the event of a fire and to enable the fire to be fought in its early stages. Effective smoke control systems ensure smoke and hot gases can be vented from escape routes within high-rise buildings including corridors, lobbies and especially staircases.
They are usually designed to operate on a floor by floor basis, when a detector or call point is triggered the smoke control system automatically opens smoke doors and Automatic Opening Vents (AOVs), actuators and windows to create ventilation and allow smoke to be removed from the affected area and keep escape routes clear.
Smoke ventilation systems are an effective way of:
• Keeping escape and access routes free from smoke
• Facilitating fire-fighting operations
• Reducing the risk of the fire developing further
• Protecting the contents of the building
• Reducing the risk of damage to the building
