CO2 Fire Suppression System
Carbon dioxide, (CO2) is a colourless, odourless, electrically non-conductive gas that is highly efficient as a fire suppression extinguishant. It suppresses a fire by cooling and asphyxiating the fire, thus removing the essential oxygen and heat the fire needs.
When applied to a fire, CO2 provides a heavy blanket of gas that reduces the oxygen level to a point where combustion cannot occur. Because CO2 is a gas, a major advantage is there is no clean-up required following a CO2 fire suppression discharge. This in turn means there is only minimal interruption to your business.
Even at 7.5% concentration, CO2 can cause asphyxiation to humans. Most CO2 fire suppression systems are designed to have 34% CO2 concentrations. However, when designed correctly CO2 fire suppression is the best and most effective solution to almost any application. It is also very important to properly train all personnel on the dangers of a CO2 fire suppression system and how to evacuate safely if the system is discharging.
As CO2 is colourless and odourless, odourises, such as ‘Wintergreen’ are added to the discharge in order that a smell can be detected when the system is discharging.
CO2 fire suppression is suitable for both local applications as well as total flooding applications.
Major Advantages of using CO2 are:
- Non-corrosive
- Non-Conductive
- Zero Ozone Depletion
- Zero Global Warming
- Easily distributed
- Cost of Extinguishant
