Fire Extinguishers

Fire extinguishers are hand-held portable devices that discharge various types of firefighting agents to extinguish or control small fires. They are available in various sizes and filled with different
extinguishant agents in order to be effective for different types of fires.

There are over 40 different types of fire extinguisher, the most common ones being; Water, Foam, CO2, Dry Powder and Wet Chemical.

Each type of fire extinguisher is colour coded according to the type of extinguishant agent it contains. Fire extinguishers are probably the most recognisable form of fire safety equipment and usually represent the first line of defence in the event of a fire.

Fire Extinguisher regulations form part of The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order and it is mandated within these regulations, that fire extinguishers are required in all buildings. The regulations state that, Class A fire risks are generally present in all buildings and therefore a minimum of two Class A fire extinguishers are required per floor, which should always be clearly visible and accessible. All premises used for non-domestic purposes, with a few minor exceptions, come under this order.
